A 17th-century house at Felingerrig
Plas Dolguog is a 17th-century country house at Felingerrig on the edge of Machynlleth, with grounds looking out to the breathtaking foothills of the Snowdonia National Park. The hotel has 12 en-suite rooms with modern facilities: six rooms in the main house — each with individual character and many original features of the beautiful old building — and six in the Stables annexe. The mature gardens are a feature in themselves, and guests on the annexe balconies can sit and watch the wildlife that comes with a country-house setting in the Dyfi Valley.
Rooms and the Stables annexe
The hotel's bedrooms have been refurbished and offer stunning views of the grounds. The Stables annexe adds a new dimension to the hotel's appeal: its ground-floor rooms offer facilities for the less mobile guest, while upstairs the Executive and Superior rooms provide balconies for sitting, viewing the mature gardens and watching the wildlife. All bedrooms are individually furnished and decorated — some with balconies or terraces (available on request for an additional charge) — and come with TV, radio, direct-dial telephone, internet access, hairdryer and hospitality tray. All bedrooms and public areas are smoke-free, with a smoking area on the patio by the dining room.

Exploring from the hotel
Machynlleth's attractions are all close at hand: the 1874 clock tower, the Owain Glyndŵr Parliament House, the MOMA galleries and the 700-year-old Wednesday market. Glyndŵr's Way climbs into the hills straight from town, mountain bikers have the Mach trails and the Dyfi Bike Park three miles north, and Corris — with its narrow-gauge railway, craft centre and King Arthur's Labyrinth — is 5.6 miles up the A487. Wider afield, Aberdyfi and its beach are 11.7 miles away, Aberystwyth is under half an hour by road or an ~33-minute train ride, and Machynlleth station on the scenic Cambrian Line has direct trains from Shrewsbury and Birmingham — the hotel makes a comfortable base at the end of a car-free journey.
Getting here and getting around
The hotel stands on the edge of Machynlleth, where two trunk roads meet: the A487 between Dolgellau and Aberystwyth, and the A489 running east towards Newtown. Reckon on around 29 minutes by car from Aberystwyth (17.8 miles) and about an hour and a quarter from Shrewsbury (56 miles). Arriving by rail works well too: Machynlleth station, on the Cambrian Line, is the nearest station to the hotel, most Birmingham services run direct in around 2 hours 21 minutes, and Aberystwyth is roughly 33 minutes away on a broadly hourly service. What's open nearby, and when
The Wednesday market fills Maengwyn Street under a charter granted by Edward I in 1291, with around 50 traders working from morning to mid-afternoon. The Owain Glyndŵr Parliament House on the same street opens Wednesdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and is free, as is MOMA Machynlleth at the Tabernacle, whose seven galleries hold more than 400 works by artists working in Wales. Three miles north, the Centre for Alternative Technology ended walk-up admissions in 2023 and takes pre-booked visits only.

Plas Dolguog's own website now presents the house as a guest house with individually named en-suite rooms — the Wagner and Mozart suites, the Puccini, Bizet and Verdi rooms among them, several with balconies — and breakfast as a hamper. A separate five-bedroom Coach House is let for self-catering, and the orangery is used for music, comedy and theatre as well as weddings.
